Marty Finkel
The Good Life
-

Marty Finkel is a 22-year old musician from Oregon, USA - here with his second album. He is said to have made a huge leap from being a Foo Fighters fan to being close to obsessed with the writing of Elliot Smith (even tattoed "XO" on his arm). Well, it's obvious to me, listening to The Good Life, that the distance is getting farther.

More of Beatles, Brendan Benson and Smith here than anything near grunge or harder side of rock.. "Under The City Lights" might just confuse anyone into thinking that Grant Lee Buffalo is on the stereo. "Annabelle Gentry" takes my mind to Old 97's. In spite of all these references, Finkel has a voice of his own, picking up pieces of inspiration here and there. The more I listen to the record, the more I am convinced that this is a 22 year old we'll be hearing a lot more from.

I am intrigued by what I am hearing already, and really have no need to talk of things to come. It's catchy in its ways, quirky in many other ways, but solid in most ways.
