Benjamin Booker
Benjamin Booker
ATO Records / Rough Trade Records

New Orleans-born singer Benjamin Booker has a style that's very appealing on his debut album. "Violent Shiver" shows why he's supported Jack White in concert, a propulsive and bluesy tune with a classy feel to it. "Slow Coming" shows off Booker's sandpaper-rough voice in a slower setting, and it works beautifully. He's a real talent.

"Happy Homes" is another explosive track that Booker handles with his usual cool swagger. He must be dynamite live. "By the Evening" closes the album on a good note, the priming young singer playing a bluesy song that's as timeless as it's great. He's got a style that's all his own, with echoes of past masters peering through.
