Low
Some Hearts (At Christmas Time)
Sub Pop Records

So, if you're dreaming of a low Xmas. here's "Some Hearts (At Christmas Time)". All you need is Low.

Low have put out X-mas songs before, like the Christmas EP (on Kranky Records, 1999). A track from that EP was even launched as a single two years earlier, "If You Were Born Today (Song for Little Baby Jesus)" for the Wurlitzer Jukebox label in 1997 (the b-side, "Blue Christmas", also re-appeared on the 1999 EP). The band also released the single "Santa's Coming Over" in 2008 (for the Sub Pop label). "Some Hearts (At Christmas Time)" comes with a short personal note from the band:

'To friends who have moved away and friends who have passed on this year. To one and all, especially those who are alone, we wish you a Merry Christmas and new hope for the new year. May we all find ways to lift each other.'
With love,
Mimi, Alan and Steve'

Well, you can't go wrong with Low, even though they're settling for the tristesse X-mas. This is no happy, jolly X-mas song. Not all X-mas are so, remember. Mimi sings like an angel, though. The song is low and stripped, only accompanied by some discreet guitar, some discreet keyboard and some discreet harmonies. Silent night, indeed. Low is all you need? Well, add some sugar, some nuts, and a ginger ale and you're all set. Cheers, merry etc.
